Pet of the Month: Emma
Emma came into the clinic not feeling her best. She didn't want to eat, was drinking a lot of water, wasn't very active, having a hard time getting around, panting a lot and just seemed uncomfortable.
When she arrived she had a fever which indicated there could be an infection somewhere. Blood work was performed and she had an elevated white blood cell which confirmed an infection. Emma was an intact female and she had some discharge from her vulva, so Dr. Huneke was concerned that she had what is called a pyometra, which is a infection of the uterus.
Pyometras can be very life threatening to female dogs and so emergency surgery was performed to remove the infected uterus and ovaries. As suspected her uterus contained a very large infection, weighing almost 5 pounds! A normal healthy uterus will usually weigh under 1 pound. Emma stayed the night with us after surgery with IV fluids to help flush her system, she was able to go home to her family the next day. Emma is fully recovered now and back to her happy healthy self!
